Indoor rowing has seen remarkable global growth in recent years. Advances in hardware, software, and athlete engagement have driven the rise of Connected Rowing, transforming the discipline into an accessible, interactive, and highly competitive sport. No longer limited to training centers or gyms. Today’s rowers compete through connected equipment and real-time digital racing, linking athletes across countries, time zones, and skill levels. The result is a redefined competitive experience built on precision, immediacy, and community.
This momentum came into full focus at the Nederlands Kampioenschap Indoorroeien (NKIR) (the Dutch National Indoor Rowing Championship) held on 13 December 2025 in Amsterdam. Each year, hundreds of athletes from across the Netherlands and Internationally gather to take on a 2km test. The ultimate benchmark in rowing.
At the center of this evolution are RP3 and MoveLab, two organizations driving innovation in indoor rowing. RP3 has long been the rowing machine developed with rowers in mind. 70% of medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics were won by crews who train consistently on the RP3, and 80% of medalling countries at the 2025 European Rowing Championships use RP3 into their programs. The Netherlands, a programme that fully adopted RP3, was the most successful country at the Paris Olympic games, and the most recent World Rowing Championships in Shanghai, respectively.
MoveLab builds the connected layer that brings this performance to life: seamless hardware integration, athlete-friendly interfaces, accurate live rankings, real-time data streaming, and event-ready workflows, among many more, without the use of any central cabling. All operated through an on premises network, this enables ease of use and stability.
Together, this collaboration enables the NKIR to be more interactive, more connected, and more engaging than ever before. Reflecting on the significance of this event, Joris Blaak, CEO of MoveLab Studio, stated:
“Events like the NKIR are pushing connected fitness to a level where quality and data integrity are pushed to new levels, setting a benchmark for the market.”
Jan, CEO of RP3, added:
“The development of indoor rowing has evolved because data is increasing its importance in the sport of rowing. With our machine, which is the dynamic machine and with the software that MoveLab develops we can now say that the data we are producing for rowers and in racing is very exclusive”
The NKIR is a moment where every piece of that ecosystem meets. It’s where athletes feel the full impact of connected rowing technology, and where years of development from both MoveLab and RP3 materialize.
RP3 manufactures the leading dynamic rowing machine., trusted by elite athletes, national teams, clubs, and rowing enthusiasts worldwide. Built for rowers, by rowers. As one of the most advanced and connected rowing machines on the market, RP3 delivers data-rich performance insights and realistic rowing dynamics that support athletes at every level.
