National Academy of Sports Medicine® (NASM), a global leader in fitness and wellness training and certifications, announces Mike Shanko as the new Chief Information Officer (CIO) of NASM. With more than 25 years of experience, Shanko has worked within technology strategy, risk management, compliance, cybersecurity, and governance sectors, establishing organizational resilience and operational success.
Recognized by Inspire as a 2022 Global CIO of the Year, Shanko is a proven transformational leader with diverse experience in high tech, finance, utilities, supply chain, and pharmaceuticals. Most recently, he served as the SVP, CIO for Blue Yonder, where he led a technology function that serviced the company’s global operations across 32 locations.
As the NASM CIO, Shanko will be responsible for overseeing NASM’s technology initiatives, driving innovation, and enhancing the digital infrastructure to better support NASM’s mission of empowering fitness professionals worldwide. With a focus on leveraging technology to deliver top-notch educational resources and tools, Shanko’s leadership is expected to elevate NASM’s position as a frontrunner in the fitness industry.

In his role, Shanko will partner with the Ascend ITS team to execute the NASM technology roadmap in the near term. Simultaneously, he will establish a dedicated tech organization within NASM that will report to him. This duality aligns with NASM’s goal of establishing an embedded technology operation inside the organization that is aligned with the unique needs of the business and go-to-market efforts.
Shanko graduated from Liberty University with a Bachelor of Science in Management Information Systems and obtained a Certification in Executive Negotiation from Harvard Law School. Outside of work, he enjoys aeronautics, physical fitness, off-roading, hiking, and traveling.
