Spren today announced breakthrough results from a landmark validation study conducted at Pennington Biomedical Research Center, demonstrating that its smartphone camera-based body composition technology achieves gold standard accuracy with unprecedented validation rigor.
The study, conducted in partnership with Dr. Steven Heymsfield—the most cited researcher in body composition analysis—validated Spren’s technology against three separate DXA machines from two different manufacturers. The results showed a mean absolute error of 2.6% (1.9% median) and 0.95 Pearson correlation, placing Spren’s smartphone app within the natural measurement variability of the machines themselves — out performing most hardware-based solutions as compared to DXA.
“This represents the most rigorous validation methodology demonstrated in camera-based body composition technology to date,” said Jason Moore, CEO of Spren. “We validated against three independent DXA machines that were not used in the training data, eliminating the selection bias that compromises many AI health validation studies.”
Spren has served over 120 universities and research institutions, processed more than 100,000 body scans, and analyzed billions of biomarkers. The company recently announced a global partnership with Snap Fitness, demonstrating commercial viability alongside academic validation.
The technology democratizes gold standard body composition analysis, making DXA-level measurements accessible through any phone camera for applications in metabolic health, fitness, and clinical assessment.
