Disruptors Take on Health Insurance

New guard.

With employer healthcare costs expected to rise nearly 10% for the fourth straight year, new insurance models are disrupting a broken system.

Costco. After entering fertility care, the retailer is partnering with nonprofit insurer SCAN Group to offer Medicare plans, teasing a “re-invented pharmacy experience” spanning vision, hearing, and OTC benefits.

Alan. Pairing a prevention-first ethos with a consumer-facing “super app,” French insurance platform Alan recently added €480M at a €5.5B valuation to scale globally — delivering rapid reimbursements plus telemedicine with meditation, fitness, and AI-driven coaching.

Oscar. Challenging the group coverage model, ICHRA leader Oscar Health added nearly 1M members in the past year, reporting $361M in profit and 70% YoY revenue gains in Q2. Launching health marketplace Lucie and teasing a potential Hims partnership, CEO Mark Bertolini said the TAM is >200M lives.

Punchline: Health insurance is at an inflection point, with the status quo proving unsustainable.
