By spring 2022, gyms fully reopened and membership hit 68.9 million, 7.3% above 2019 levels (IHRSA). But digital platforms had to pivot: the strategy shifted from replacement to retention, keeping pandemic-acquired users engaged through flexibility and expanded offerings.
The convergence happened fast, as the global fitness app market hit $10.6 billion in 2024. MyFitnessPal isn’t just tracking anymore; it has AI coaching. Peloton isn’t just connected hardware; it’s a wellness platform with meditation and sleep content. The fundamental question changed from “which app?” to “which platform ties my complete health picture together?”
