DEKA Launches the World’s First Global Functional Fitness Competition for Gyms

For years, competitive fitness has celebrated individual achievement. Runners have marathons. HYROX has its global race series. CrossFit has the Games. Now, DEKA is turning the spotlight onto the gyms behind the athletes.

DEKA, the global fitness racing brand created by the team behind Spartan™, has announced the launch of Gym vs Gym – a new worldwide competition that will see DEKA affiliate gyms across the globe race the exact same DEKA MILE format over one synchronised weekend, creating the first global competition designed specifically for fitness communities rather than individual athletes.

Taking place from 2nd–4th October 2026, every participating affiliate gym will host the same DEKA MILE course, with members competing on home turf while contributing towards their gym’s overall position on an international leaderboard.

Rather than rewarding a single elite performance, Gym vs Gym measures collective performance, with results calculated using the average DEKA Marks recorded across Age Group and Team categories, rewarding consistency and participation across an entire gym community.

Emily leRoux, Vice President at DEKA International, said:  “Great gyms aren’t built around one exceptional athlete – they’re built around communities. Gym vs Gym celebrates exactly that. It’s an opportunity for coaches, members and local communities to work towards one shared goal while seeing how they compare with gyms around the world. We wanted to create something that every affiliate could be proud to host, whether they’re introducing someone to fitness for the first time or supporting experienced racers.”

A new model for community fitness

The launch follows a period of rapid growth for DEKA, with Arena events now hosted in 41 cities across 12 countries, and new locations joining the calendar every month. Gym vs Gym represents the next step in that evolution, giving affiliate gyms the opportunity to be part of a synchronised global competition without leaving their local community.

Unlike one-off competitions hosted in major arenas, Gym vs Gym allows athletes to compete on a global stage without leaving their local gym. Every participating DEKA Affiliate gym hosts the event across the same weekend, with scores contributing to a single global leaderboard tracking performances by gym, country, region and individual.

The format centres exclusively on the DEKA MILE – a one mile functional fitness race combining ten standardised fitness zones with 160 metre running intervals. Athletes tackle movements including rowing, SkiErg, weighted lunges, farmers carries, tank push and pull, wall overs, burpees and box step-overs, creating a test of strength, endurance and strategy that is identical in every participating venue worldwide.

Built for participation, not just podiums

Unlike many competitive fitness formats, Gym vs Gym has been designed to encourage broad participation.

Affiliate gyms can run heats across all three days of the competition weekend, allowing gyms to maximise participation across the event weekend. Individual age-group athletes and two-person teams both contribute towards their gym’s overall standing, while non-members are also encouraged to race, helping introduce new people to local affiliate communities.

Gyms meeting the minimum participation threshold will compete for two global titles: Fastest Gym and Highest Participation, with winners receiving the coveted Golden RAM Trophy alongside global recognition.

Every athlete receives an official DEKA Mark, finisher medal and T-shirt, with performances permanently recorded on the worldwide leaderboard.

Yancy Culp, Co-Creator and Senior Director of DEKA, said: “This isn’t about replacing existing competitions. It’s about giving gyms something they can own together. The energy that comes from an entire community training towards one weekend, welcoming new faces through the doors and representing their gym on a global stage is incredibly powerful. That’s what community fitness should look like.”

Affiliate gyms have until the 17th July to officially register for the Gym vs Gym World Challenge.
