Held from July 10–12, DEKA – the global fitness racing brand created by the team behind Spartan™ – welcomed competitors representing 274 gyms from across Chicagoland and beyond for three days of functional fitness racing.
The weekend delivered everything a major sporting event should: elite performances, a new world record and thousands of personal victories. Nearly three-quarters of competitors (73%) were making their DEKA debut, highlighting the sport’s growing appeal among everyday athletes looking for a new kind of challenge – one built around capability, community and measurable progress.
Women were at the heart of that growth, making up 51% of the overall field and nearly six in 10 competitors (59%) in the two-person team division. Almost half of all participants (46%) chose to race as part of a team, reflecting a shift toward fitness experiences that bring people together through shared goals, encouragement and achievement.
While athletes travelled from across the United States and overseas – including one competitor making the 9,282-mile journey from Bondi Junction, Australia – DEKA Chicago remained firmly rooted in its local community. More than 56% of competitors came from the Greater Chicago area, with athletes representing 274 gyms across Chicagoland and beyond, showcasing the strength of the region’s fitness community and the growing momentum behind functional fitness racing.
Tyler Spencer, Event Director, at DEKA said: “Chicago perfectly captured what DEKA is all about. Yes, we saw world-class performances, but what stood out just as much was seeing so many first-time racers alongside experienced athletes. That’s where the future of fitness is headed – towards communities that challenge each other, support each other and celebrate every finish line.”
World record falls in the Windy City
The weekend also produced one of the biggest moments in DEKA history. Elite athletes Lauren Weeks and Janelle Teal set a new DEKA Teams World Record, completing the DEKA FIT course in 27:41 and breaking a mark that had stood since 2024.
Lauren Weeks, HYROX Elite 15 athlete, three-time HYROX World Champion and coach, took to Instagram with a heartfelt message: “Start lines and signing up for things where we are making ourselves vulnerable can be scary. But there is so much value in pushing for excellence within ourselves. It carries over to what we do and how we carry ourselves outside of sport.
Keep chasing those goals, keep chasing those big dreams, keep putting yourself in situations and environments that challenge you. By investing in bettering yourself, you are investing in your community and your loved ones around you.”
A new model for community fitness
Unlike traditional fitness competitions, every DEKA event follows the same standardized format, allowing athletes to compare performances anywhere in the world through their official DEKA Mark.
The course combines ten functional fitness zones – including rowing, SkiErg, weighted lunges, farmer’s carries, tank push and pull, wall overs and burpees – with running intervals to test strength, endurance and strategy using movements that translate directly into everyday life.
Whether athletes are chasing a world record or crossing the finish line for the very first time, every participant earns their DEKA Mark – a globally recognized benchmark of functional fitness that can be measured, improved and compared at every race around the world.
Chicago fuels the next chapter of fitness racing
From local gym communities to athletes traveling thousands of miles to compete, DEKA Chicago showcased the growing reach of functional fitness racing. With 274 gyms represented across the field, the event highlighted the role communities are playing in bringing more people into the sport.
As DEKA continues to expand across North America and internationally, Chicago stands as a reflection of that growth — a place where elite performance, first-time achievements and shared experiences all have a place on the same start line.
Forged from the unyielding spirit of Spartan™, DEKA emerges as more than just an event; it’s the next evolution in fitness and hybrid racing. Drawing on a legacy of pushing human limits, this is a sport engineered to be universally accessible, objectively measurable, and fundamentally designed to empower and celebrate every level of ability – from the curious first-timer to the elite athlete.
In addition to electrifying arena competition in iconic global venues, its true genius lies in the unique affiliate model, empowering a thriving network of over 1,000 gyms worldwide. With 1,500+ DEKA events across more than 12 countries on five continents this is Spartan innovation, redefined for all.
