The Fit Guide Releases Groundbreaking World Fitness Industry Reports, Starting with New York City

London, UK / May 8, 2024 / The Fit Guide

NEW YORK, USA – The Fit Guide (TFG), the only independent rating system for the fitness industry, today announced the release of the first of its highly anticipated “Year One” industry reports. The reports offer insights drawn from more than 100,000 data points across anonymous visits to 250 of the world’s leading fitness clubs.

One of the first two reports, released today and focusing entirely on New York, shows that the city sets the global benchmark for both Pilates, and HIIT & Strength studios, topping the charts with the highest standards and experiences compared to its international counterparts. Barre studios also performed well, scoring second highest of the five modalities assessed. However, there is room for improvement in other areas; New York’s yoga studios placed third worldwide out of five cities, with cycling studios fourth.

Other critical statistics drawn from TFGs 250 standards show where New York’s boutique fitness clubs are excelling and falling short, such as:

  • Reception staff in New York used client names during interactions 34% of the time, trailing the global average of 42.9%
  • Timeliness is a concern, with classes starting late 26% of the time and finishing late 30%, potentially disrupting the tight schedules of New York’s busy populace
  • Injury checks were conducted in only 30% of New York’s sessions, the lowest against a global average of 57.4%, highlighting a significant area for improvement in client safety
  • Overall, New York ranks second out of the five cities evaluated by The Fit Guide

Jack Thomas, co-founder of TFG and host of the Fitness Business Asia podcast, said, “Our team has put a huge amount of time and energy into visiting, and carefully evaluating, over 250 clubs and experiences. We’re excited to be now sharing our data and stats to help the fitness industry reflect and improve.”

Matt Lavender, co-founder of TFG and CEO of the hospitality consultancy, Enlites, added, “One of our aims when creating The Fit Guide was to encourage the relatively young boutique fitness industry to learn from the more established luxury hospitality industry. These industry reports help us achieve that aim by sharing 100s of valuable insights that clubs and studios can use to improve their client experience.”

For those looking for a deeper dive into global fitness trends, TFG has also released a comprehensive World Report, containing the full data set from all cities and modalities. For example, it was found that globally, the boutique industry is performing weakly in sales, with only 18.3% of studios making an attempt to close a sale. The World Report is being offered at a discounted $99 from the original $399 until the end of May.

All TFG’s reports showcase profiles of premier fitness experiences as well as reflections and insights on the data from leading fitness industry figures such as Emma Barry and Anthony Vennare.

Following the Worldwide and New York reports, nine others will shortly be released for London, Singapore, Sydney and Dubai, as well as those focussing on HIIT/Strength, Cycling, Yoga, Barre and Pilates.

TFG are offering one complimentary city or modality report to everyone, with Fitt Insider readers eligible for two complimentary reports. To claim yours, visit The Fit Guide at www.thefitguide.com/industry-reports and quote ‘Fitt Insider’ to claim an additional free report.
