Zygo is a first-of-its-kind underwater headset technology, which, unlike existing waterproof MP3 players, enables users to stream content from their phone (music, podcasts, audiobooks); receive live coaching; and access an app of Zygo’s dynamic on-demand workouts paired with music – providing long overdue innovation within swimming.
About the Founders
Sheera Goren spent her childhood surfing and playing every sport except swimming. Following a career in law and non-profits, Sheera decided to combine her passions with work that didn’t keep her behind a desk. After reconnecting over their mutual love of all things boutique fitness, Sheera and high school classmate Charlie Melvoin were determined to solve the lack of workout options for non-swimmers in the pool. An avid marathon runner and fitness fanatic who speaks fluent Mandarin, Charlie had been studying the boutique fitness class landscape for several years before he and Sheera started SwimTeam in 2016 with the goal of addressing a void in the market for a low-impact, pool-based exercise option. They ran SwimTeam classes across pools in LA which led them to an even bigger opportunity: Zygo – the first underwater streaming headset with an app of guided workouts (“the Peloton of swimming”) while enabling swimmers to hear live instruction and music underwater.

In 2017, co-founders Sheera Goren and Charlie Melvoin noticed that swimming had been overlooked as a fitness trend, despite being the best low-impact, full-body workout. They loved boutique fitness classes like SoulCycle and Barry’s Bootcamp, and they wanted to love swimming, but it struck them as uninspiring in comparison. Spinning and running were social and entertaining experiences thanks to charismatic instructors, great playlists, and varied exercise routines, whereas swimming remained solitary, boring and silent. The only group options – such as Masters swimming – felt very intimidating to these two non-swimmers.
Determined to solve this, Sheera and Charlie started SwimTeam, a 45-minute pool-based class for all levels. They ran SwimTeam at pools across LA, but in order to do so, they first spent months hacking their own headset solution to broadcast a live coach and Spotify playlist to their swimmers. It was the overhwleming customer response to their headset that led them an even bigger opportunity: Zygo – the first underwater streaming headset with an app of guided workouts (“The Peloton of Swimming”). They began shipping in September 2020 and plan to resume in-person classes under the Zygo brand.
