Healthcare is getting harder to access, while consumers and researchers keep pushing prevention further upstream.

Healthcare gets harder to afford

A new survey from JG Wentworth found that 92% of US adults have delayed or abandoned medical care because of cost.

  • The problem extends beyond doctor visits as Americans take on medical debt, substituting OTCr drugs for prescriptions and skipping doses because they can’t afford them.
  • Companies are building lower-cost, more accessible ways to deliver care — from virtual platforms to consumer diagnostics, cash-pay services, and AI-enabled healthcare.

As the healthcare gap widens, routine care will continue to move away from expensive, episodic visits and toward lower-cost consumer models.

Regenerative agriculture is scaling up

Consumer demand around soil health, environmental impact, and the quality of the food supply is causing food companies to take regenerative agriculture mainstream.

  • Regenerative products now generate roughly $2B in annual US retail sales, according to recent industry estimates.
  • Forty global food businesses recently signed onto an initiative supporting regenerative agriculture, tying the movement to soil health, biodiversity, water stewardship, climate resilience, and farmer livelihoods.

The farm becomes part of the health stack — creating new opportunities for brands to differentiate around ingredients, sourcing, traceability, and measurable outcomes.

Lilly cracks down on black market obesity drugs

Eli Lilly filed six lawsuits against companies it says are illegally selling unapproved versions of retatrutide, its experimental obesity drug.

  • Retatrutide is still in Phase 3 trials and hasn’t been approved for human use. The companies Lilly sued include compounding pharmacies, medical spas, and online peptide sellers.
  • Lilly says it has referred more than 200 individuals and entities to regulators and law enforcement, while US Customs and Border Protection intercepted nearly 90K illicit GLP-1 vials in July alone.

As obesity drugs move toward mass adoption, controlling distribution is becoming as important as drug development.
