Fitness Creates New Rites of Passage

Second wind.
Marathon

The finish line is just the beginning.

More than exercise, fitness has become a cultural pursuit, with people moving together for community, identity, and meaning.

Chasing new challenges, participants have something to prove — to themselves and their peers.

Peaking. Modern rites of passage for everyday athletes, NYC turned away 99% of its 240K ’26 marathon applicants, while London is expanding to accommodate more of its 1.3M hopefuls.

Still accelerating, HYROX expects 2M global participants for ’26/’27, up from 650K in ’25, prompting it to adopt a 10-day festival format.

Building clout, more fitness and apparel brands are offering pre-race training plans and pop-ups — but few are designing for what comes after.

Crestfallen. The Arrival Fallacy—the belief that achievement alone delivers lasting fulfillment—is catching up with weekend warriors.

Gymshark found more than a third of HYROX finishers feel a euphoric finish followed by a deflating post-race experience. Likewise, multi-marathoners report higher anxiety and depression, often moving the goalposts without appreciating the accomplishment.

Cue the Confetti

Elite athletes are mentally conditioned for Sisyphean efforts, but helping amateurs prevent burnout preserves both the bottom line and spirit of competition.

With hobbyists showing up for connection as much as performance, smart brands are designing experiential moments of presence — from Bandit’s medal portraits to On’s commemorative flash tattoos and Gymshark’s sandwich shop takeover.

Kickback. A halo effect, the NYC Marathon generated $692M for the local economy, while Marathon Tours & Travel and HYROX Tours design itineraries around events.

Strengthening the ecosystem, coordinating the post-race experience could unlock more value for participants, brands, cities, and organizers.

Punchline: Competitive fitness has perfected the pursuit but neglected the aftermath. As participation grows, the finish line is where the next journey begins.
