Gyms Build Around GLP-1s

Gyms are embracing GLP-1s.

Pro Rx. Life Time CEO Bahram Akradi recently doubled down on the company’s GLP-1 strategy, arguing it’s a “wrong bet” that weight-loss drugs will hurt the fitness industry.

Instead, he believes health clubs are a critical companion to treatment. All in, Life Time’s MIORA clinics pair prescriptions with diagnostics, nutrition, strength training, and coaching to improve long-term outcomes.

Proof point. A recent HFA report found combining structured exercise with Rx weight loss drugs could prevent $27B in US medical costs, including ~50K cardiovascular events.

Over the next decade, companion fitness programs could generate $120B in economic value, delivering ~$5 in savings for every dollar spent.

Stay strong. While many GLP-1 users report greater motivation, research shows physical activity declines after treatment begins, with users averaging ~600 fewer steps and six minutes less of vigorous exercise.

Citing the drugs’ negative effects on muscle mass and bone density, Life Time’s Akradi believes “it will be an epidemic if it’s not handled correctly.”

Punchline: From Life Time and Equinox to Monarch Athletic and UFC Gym, fitness operators are positioning themselves as the missing layer between weight-loss drugs and long-term health — where movement and medicine go hand in hand.
