Midjourney is changing course.
The latest: The AI image generation company launched Midjourney Medical, unveiling a full-body ultrasound scanner and plans for wellness-focused scanning spas.
Fast track. Using ultrasound and water immersion instead of radiation and magnets, Midjourney aims to reduce scan times to ~60 seconds, with ambitions for 50K scanners worldwide.
Wellness first. The company’s initial focus is body composition mapping rather than clinical diagnostics. To bring the technology to market, Midjourney plans to open its first wellness spa in San Francisco in 2027, featuring saunas, cold plunges, hot tubs, and body scanning rooms.
Scan Inc. Midjourney joins a growing push to make medical imaging more routine. Prenuvo popularized elective full-body MRI scans, Function acquired Ezra to expand imaging access, and Neko Health is scaling scanning clinics globally.
Reality check. Like all preventative screening tools, critics warn more testing can lead to false positives, unnecessary follow-ups, and patient anxiety. Supportive but skeptical, Ezra founder Emi Gal said: “They’ve front-run the validation and oversold the destination, but the direction is real.”
Punchline: Like most preventative screening tools, critics warn more isn’t better. But, from wearables and labs to whole-body scans, healthcare is going DTC, and consumers aren’t waiting for referrals.
