What’s happening: The USDA and RFK Jr.-led HHS released new Dietary Guidelines for Americans, promoting protein, saturated fats, fruits, and vegetables while discouraging added sugar and ultra-processed foods.
New rules. Blaming food for American illness, the agencies inverted the Food Pyramid to emphasize meat, dairy, and healthy fats alongside whole fruits and vegetables — with small consideration for fiber-rich grains like oats and sourdough bread.
Central to its campaign, the administration maintains no amount of added sugar or industrial processing is healthy—calling out sodas and energy drinks—while vilifying petroleum-based dyes, artificial flavors and sweeteners, and preservatives.
For consumption. Applying more “common sense” and less scientific jargon, its nine-page report (down from 164) blurs policy and wellness, mentioning muscle, brain, and gut health, metabolic function, hydration, and energy as outcomes.
Challenging the system, it vowed to rebuild from the ground up, reinforcing the MAHA Movement’s support of farmers, ranchers, and producers of “real food.”
Fine print. More than simply informing Americans, the report will shape legislation and policy for the next five years — impacting school lunches, federal assistance programs, and more.
Despite publishing scientific appendices, experts caution the new narrative doesn’t follow settled food science, while lack of specificity could cause more confusion — especially with no consensus UPF definition and the report’s recommendation to “drink less” alcohol.
Punchline: Eating real food is the objective, but implementation could be a shock consumers, suppliers, and the dysfunctional food system aren’t ready to handle.
