Researchers Decode the Muscle-Brain Axis

What’s happening: A study published in Molecular Psychiatry detailed the biological pathways in which exercise fights depression.

Brain power. Researchers linked running-induced increases of peptide hormone apelin within skeletal muscle to greater neuroplasticity and decreased inflammation, and alleviated depression, identifying a “muscle-brain axis” of communication.

Daily dose. Building on a body of research, movement is a miracle drug, shown to be 1.5x more effective than pharmaceutical intervention. But, its specific pathways weren’t fully understood until now.

Reiterating calls to make exercise a frontline treatment in mental health, it also opens the door to biotech innovation, including “exercise pills” for depressive disorders.

Looking ahead: Exercise is moving from behavioral advice to biological intervention, with the muscle-brain axis a promising new frontier for mental health.
