WHOOP Sues AI Health Coach Bevel

IP wars.

The Personal Health OS is headed to court.

What’s happening: WHOOP filed a trade dress infringement lawsuit against Bevel, an AI health coach.

Double vision. The $10B company alleges the 500K-user upstart copied its design and functionality, citing UI patents for recovery, strain, and sleep data.

Bevel CEO Grey Nguyen refuted the claims, citing past collaboration talks and time-stamped designs predating WHOOP’s.

Tied up. Defending its IP, WHOOP sued Polar for a screenless strap last year and won an injunction against Chinese manufacturer Lexqi in February. Across the category, hardware makers like Oura are reinforcing moats through litigation.

Intangibles. Contextualizing data, Bevel syncs with Apple, Oura, and Garmin to guide healthier habits. But, as AI coaches become standard, UX will be hard to defend.

Owning the data layer, wearables are building closed ecosystems, making interoperability less appealing and novel biomarkers more valuable.

Punchline: Seeking to protect Personal Health OS packaging, new battles are being fought on marketing claims, positioning, and look-alike infrastructure.
