The Athletic Clubs is enlisting new crews.

What’s happening: The NYC-based training concept raised $3.5M in funding to expand its network of private gyms.

Adding to its five clubs, it will expand to 15 in the next two years while entering new markets.

Roll call. Training in set squads, members meet with a coach twice weekly for strength and conditioning workouts, with supplemental class offerings available.

More than a workout, founder Dane McCarthy says the format is designed for members to get fit and hold each other accountable while having fun. With membership capped at 300–400 per location, its community is tight-knit, engagement high, and unit economics strong.

In the wild. While its clubs offer a home base for training and programming like Pilates and its new Athletic Sculpt classes, The Athletic Clubs members are active beyond four walls.

Its weekly run clubs often end in coffee or drinks, while its regular club-versus-club competitions picked up sponsorship from On.

Expanding its communities, its Hoboken club is expected this year, and its spring squad training in Austin suggests Texas is on the horizon.

Punchline: From Fitstop to HYROX, training toward specific goals requires support — and community is the secret sauce.
