Basic-Fit is going big.

What’s happening: The Dutch budget gym chain acquired German franchise clever fit, operator of 493 low-cost gyms in Germany, Austria, and other Central European countries.

Power move. The $186M deal, plus potential $17M earn-out, makes Basic-Fit Europe’s largest fitness franchise and Germany’s market leader — adding 1M members and doubling its footprint to 12 countries with more than 2,150 gyms.

Bundling 24/7 access with smart tech, group training, and recovery, both brands bring a proven playbook for high-value, low-cost growth. Supercharging its franchise expansion, Basic-Fit will leverage combined capabilities for new sites in France, Germany, and Spain.

Continental shift. Across Europe, HVLP operators are taking an expand-and-enhance approach, with Germany’s RSG Group investing millions to modernize McFIT and French brand Fitness Park securing $324M to expand internationally.

Elsewhere, the UK’s PureGym is scaling Stateside while Planet Fitness and Anytime take on VivaGym in Spain. Under new ownership, Crunch and EōS are building out strength and recovery.

Looking ahead: Blending value and volume, Basic-Fit and others are proving low-cost can mean high-impact.
