Big Food is building a balanced breakfast.

What’s happening: Italy’s Ferrero Group acquired Purely Elizabeth, a better-for-you granola and oatmeal maker.

Sweet. Founded on organic, clean-label granola, Purely Elizabeth has continued to climb on timely innovation — launching protein, prebiotic fiber, and beauty-focused SKUs. Nearing $300M in annual sales, it began exploring a sale rumored to be worth $600M in April.

Wake up. Shifting from its confectionery past, Ferrero splashed $3.1B to buy WK Kellogg in an American breakfast takeover. Cleaning up, it committed to removing artificial dyes from cereals like Froot Loops while reinvigorating house brands like Kashi.

Stay the course. Its strategy to acquire “high-growth” insurgent brands follows a wave of similar Big CPG mega-deals. Hoping to avoid the same backlash, Ferrero vouched to retain Purely Elizabeth’s “distinctive identity” while retaining founder & CEO Elizabeth Stein in her role.

Punchline: Revamping portfolios, Ferrero and other industry giants want their turn to steer the wellness rocketship. But, with loyal consumers on alert, no dips in quality will be tolerated.
