Running is getting pricey.

Big spenders. US running apparel sales climbed 10% to nearly $1B, while sales of $150+ running shoes jumped 46%, per Circana.

Running's Boom Goes Premium

New flex. As run clubs and finisher medals signal identity and status, participation has expanded beyond logging miles — with some runners now spending nearly $1.5K/year on apparel, shoes, gear, race entries, nutrition, and subscriptions.

Tastemakers. Beyond technical gear, brands like Satisfy, Bandit, and District Vision built subcultures around taste, community, and belonging. Executing premium playbooks, Satisfy expects 50–60% revenue growth in 2026, while District Vision is growing ~30% a year, per Bloomberg.

The signal: Running is still easy to start, and the essentials remain affordable. But as “runner” becomes a luxury identity, looking the part is more expensive than ever.
