Alone time isn’t the answer.
What’s happening: A Talkspace-commissioned survey highlights deteriorating relationships and social skills, even as desire for community builds.
(Dis)connection. An ongoing epidemic, nearly half of Americans feel lonely daily, and 68% struggle to build IRL community, despite a third wanting more local connection.
Introverting. Self-isolating, social skills are declining. Roughly a third experience social anxiety, prefer to be alone, or feel they don’t fit in.
Fueling antisocial habits, ~40% would cross the street or fake phone calls to avoid small talk. Going silent, the majority evade difficult conversations, and 38% shut out a loved one, a behavior nearly doubling among Gen Z.
Analoging. Compounding the problem, consumers are opting for online ordering, self-checkouts, and chatbots to avoid IRL interaction. Seeking to reestablishing connection, wellness culture is scaling phone-free hangouts, intentional dating apps, and introspective social clubs.
Punchline: Real relationships require friction. For the digitally native and increasingly introverted, it’s not easy but necessary.
